We have all forgotten at least once where we parked the car, but for some this situation becomes a nice daily treasure hunt.

People's cognitive ability has gained visibility during the current American presidential campaign, but it is not just a problem of presidents and senators, every day 10.000 Americans turn 65 and still work.

Companies once hid older workers in less critical roles, waiting until they reached retirement age.

But today we need to find balance in a workforce that may suffer from cognitive decline or appear that way to younger colleagues.

In the workplace, memory is often the most visible part of cognition and one of the most complex. Research states that it reaches its peak around the age of 25 and is already declining around the age of 30. The pace at which this happens varies enormously from person to person and is strongly influenced by health and lifestyle choices.

Performing at a high level, despite a temperamental memory, requires a combination of humility and the ability to adapt.

However, for the vast majority of employees, young or old, who forget, these measures will never be necessary, because companies are full of easy solutions, i.e. colleagues. Like the phalanx of staff members that accompanies every senior executive, the team and assistants can compensate for mild, common memory problems. As long as someone knows where and when the next meeting will be, all is well.

And the task of those who manage a company is to create a favorable environment so that this mutual support can easily take place.

Because, after all, corporate life is the team sport par excellence.
