In Italy an employment relationship lasts on average 13 years.

No European country records a higher figure, the average is around 8 years.

This record is also confirmed by Eurostat data: Italy is third in the ranking for the number of employees who have worked for the same employer for more than 10 years, more than 50%, Slovenia and Portugal also exceed this percentage, against a European average of 44% and values just above 30% in Sweden and Denmark.

This data can be read and interpreted in different aspects.

On the one hand there is the cultural aspect, mostly linked to an idea of stability guaranteed by the permanent job.

In a particularly unstable job market, a permanent job becomes a highly sought-after prospect, since job stability allows people, for example, to make long-term plans, such as buying a house or having a child. This element, combined with the low mobility of the labor market, contributes to fueling this culture of permanent employment, which distinguishes Italy and, in general, the countries of Southern Europe.

However, in recent years, the situation seems to be changing.

According to a SWG survey, carried out in Italy, to date only 25% of those interviewed recognize that a permanent job is an indispensable characteristic, compared to 48% in 2003.

People's priorities are changing: but is the infrastructure, which governs mobility and relocation in the world of work, adapting to these changed conditions?
